Hawaiʻi County is a county located in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi in the Hawaiian Islands. It is coterminous with the Island of Hawaiʻi (sometimes called the Big Island). As of 2000 Census the population was 148,677. The county seat is Hilo. There are no incorporated cities in Hawaiʻi County (see Hawaiʻi Counties). Hawaiʻi County has a mayor-council form of government. Executive authority is vested in the Mayor, elected by the voters on a non-partisan basis to a four-year term. Legislative authority is vested in the nine-member County Council, each of whose members represent a district. Members of the County Council are elected on a non-partisan basis to two-year terms.
